  • A Brief History of Izmir

    The city has a history of more than 8,000 years, making it one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the Mediterranean.

    In ancient times the city was called Smyrna.

    Ancient Period

    Early settlements existed here as far back as 3000 BC. Greek colonists later developed Smyrna into an important port city. According to legend, the famous poet Homer was born here.

    Hellenistic Period

    The city was rebuilt by the generals of Alexander the Great in the 4th century BC after he conquered Anatolia.

    Roman and Byzantine Periods

    Under Roman rule, Smyrna flourished as a wealthy trading port. It became famous for its architecture, temples, and theaters.

    Ottoman Period

    In the 15th century, the city became part of the Ottoman Empire. During this period, İzmir grew into one of the most cosmopolitan ports of the Mediterranean, home to Turks, Greeks, Armenians, Jews, and European merchants.

    Modern History

    After the events of the Greco‑Turkish War, Izmir became part of modern Türkiye in 1922.
